NLP is the study of the impact of languages on the thought processes of our mind. It’s considered the controlling mechanism of the brain. Once someone learns to communicate using NLP, his communication becomes more effective.

Thought processes and our 5 senses in our brain are initiated by stimulus we get from our sense organs. The stimuli from the plethora of sense organs are then communicated via electro chemical signals to our brain. These signals are then translated into images that can be recognized by our brain. The information that isn’t processed by the brain in the form of electro chemical signals is called the primary experience. It’s initially analyzed or interpreted by the brain. The image conceived from the primary experience is called secondary experience.

NLP can be used to make sense of how we are carrying out things and how they can be done better. Secondary experience is developed from a person’s past experiences. The primary experience is actually the actual truth of a situation. If you can communicate with someone using the primary experience, their way of thinking can be changed. Reprogramming the internal processes taking place in a person is very helpful. This will inevitably lead to a change in behavior in the person, which in turn produces better results.

Often blame is placed on the person, which is an attack on the identity level. When in truth the change needs to occur on the behavior and attitudes level and how that person behaves. What needs to change is a change in the attitudes and behavior of a person, not their personality or who they are. This is a recipe for success when bringing out the desired changes in the life of a person. If you’re looking to be a better manager, communicator or even public speaker, using NLP will allow you to communicate more effectively. Also, if change is desired with yourself, or someone else that might need it, NLP is very helpful in bringing about change in a person.

The Link Between NLP and Hypnosis

I was standing in a queue the other day and overheard a snippet of conversation between two gentlemen. One was describing Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) to the other and was very enthusiastically mentioning the ways in which it can be used to train your brain to achieve different outcomes. He was clearly very keen on NLP and had fully grasped its potential to help achieve success in almost everything you might wish to do.

I heartily agree with this gentleman. NLP offers the human race an amazing set of mental tools or mental skills which can be applied easily, quickly and most importantly, they are powerfully effective. What piqued my curiosity was his answer to a question posed by his friend, namely "isn't NLP hypnosis?" He replied that NLP was completely different, a separate thing entirely. I have heard this response more than once, which made me wonder why so many people seem to want to deny the central part which hypnosisplayed in the foundation of NLP and the part which hypnosis continues to play in its application.

It was after all the work of Milton Erickson (world renowned psychotherapist and hypnotherapist) which formed the foundation of a lot of NLP. NLP in fact has a very close association with hypnosis. So why deny it? I have come to the conclusion that some people are afraid of the "mystical image" of hypnosis whereas NLP is "sold" as just something incredibly logical and thus has more appeal to the professional person's mentality. I can only conjecture as to the reason, and in reality I don't suppose it matters, other than the fact that it would be beneficial to everyone to realize that it is hypnosis which effectively "powers" NLP.

NLP has been described as the new science of personal achievement. It is a highly effective methodology based on the belief that all behavior has a structure and that this structure can be modeled, learned and changed. Neuro stands for the nervous system and how we use our five senses (see, hear, feel, taste and smell) to translate experience into both conscious and unconscious thought processes. Linguistic stands for the use of language in interpreting experiences and how we communicate those experiences. Programming refers to the fact that our thoughts, feelings and actions are simply learnt programs of habit which we can change should we wish to do so.

NLP recognizes the fact that our thoughts create our emotions and direct our actions, and therefore by changing how you think you can change how you feel and act. NLP is a model of how we understand and utilize human communication, behavior and experiences to achieve a specific outcome. It has evolved into an incredibly powerful set of techniques for achieving human excellence in both business and personal development. It is a very useful tool used in rapidly dissolving a phobia, or overcoming compulsions. It has extremely far reaching applications.

But you will usually find that NLP is applied in conjunction with hypnosis, because hypnosis is a state which allows access to your subconscious mind, the part of your mind where instinctive and automatic thoughts, beliefs, habits and behaviors are stored. Thus the principles of NLP are applied whilst in hypnosis so that these inner beliefs and habits can be changed. This is why I said before that it is hypnosis which gives NLP its power. You may see it from a different angle and say that NLP is what gives hypnosis its power, but few should deny that there is a very close link between the two.

How to Use Visualization Meditation to Achieve Success

In this article I shall share with you how to use Neuro Linguistics Programming to do visualization meditation to achieve success in your life. There are three things you must do to use visualization meditation.

First of all, put yourself in a place where you can have total concentration and relaxation. Make sure that the environment is quiet or at least conducive for you to put yourself into a deep state of visualization meditation.

Secondly, make sure that you are wearing very comfortable clothes. In other words make sure that your physical state is in a relaxed manner. This could be using the comfort of the chair you are sitting in. I would recommend that you sit in a chair rather than lying on the bed because lying on the bed would probably mean you may fall asleep. What you want to do during this visualization meditation process is that you are semiconscious or at least relaxed but awakened.

Third thing you need to do is to know how to do creative visualization meditation. Neuro Linguistic Programming has a very unique technology known as tapping into your sub modalities for you to easily achieve a deep state of relaxation and a heightened state of visualization meditation. First of all, allow yourself to close your eyes and relax using your deep breathing technique. Allow yourself to go deeper into a state of relaxation and if you have any mind chatter, just politely tell your mind 'Thank you for sharing' and allow silence to come back into your mind. The very moment you allow silence into your mind, begin to use words to conjure up an image for yourself that you find desirable. This image should be the image that you see yourself achieving the success that you want. This is visualization meditation. As you are saying those words that brings up the vision of success, make the picture bigger and brighter and allow your body to totally associate with that picture that you have conjured up. Hear what you hear and feel what you feel, as if you were totally associated with the image you have brought up in your mind. Practice this as many times as possible for you to properly use the technique of visualization meditation. Neuro Linguistics Programming is a very useful tool for you to use in visualization meditation.

The Line That Divides Hypnosis And NLP

Although NLP and hypnosis are two interrelated subjects, this does not mean that they are the same with one another. There are basically a lot of methods by which a person can contact his unconscious mind to stir up change. All of these methods are different from one another in terms of advantages and disadvantages. Not all of these techniques will also influence people in the same manner because of the fact that every person is different. What works for one does not mean it will work for the other.

One of the most popular techniques is hypnosis that on the other hand comes in various forms. In traditional hypnosis, you simply provide direct suggestion to your unconscious mind. This is very much popular among people who would openly accept suggestions without giving some time to rebut them. Tapes sold for hypnosis focus on this kind of hypnosis given the fact that it does not actually entails a lot of training for someone to tell a person what to do. Because of the process is highly simple, it is one of the most ineffective methods of influencing other.

There is also what they call as the Ericksonian Hypnosis which is highly effective among people of this generation. It is a known fact that almost all people would question all issues given to them so this kind of technique addresses somebody who naturally possess an analytical way of thinking. Because of the complexity of the issue, it can take years for someone to finally master the skill. However, the challenge that is faced on studying this skill is something whom other people would find thrill with.

Now that you are aware of how hypnosis works then it is time for you to realize how it differs from NL. What makes the former different from the later is that rather than using the suggestions, it makes use of similar thought pattern. This is highly effective among individuals who would always find their self succumb in great stress because NLP can be utilized to "flip" issues around in the unconscious, in order for the thoughts and experiences that used to trigger feelings of stress would in fact prompt relaxation instead.

For someone to change their behavior for good, NLP reframing is an effective means to take. When doing the process of Reframe, a person will have to negotiate with the subconscious and will take the responsibility of allowing a person to effectively replace detrimental behaviors into better ones.

Hypnotherapy & NLP

Hypnosis is a trance or sleep like state of the mind, and in this state the individual is open to suggestions and directions, and the mind being in a relaxed state is focused and clear. Hypnotherapy is successfully used to address various problems like addiction to tobacco and alcohol, obesity, insomnia, relief from pain and various kinds of phobias and complexes. People grapple with problems and fears in their day to day life and certain phobias like fear of flying, fear of crowded places, fear of insects etc. can complicate life and can cause much embarrassment. Hypnotherapy is a method to relax the mind and shift focus from the particular issue, and over the sessions the therapy can invoke mental and physical changes, and train the mind to deal better with tensions.

The state of hypnosis differs from sleep as the person can hear the therapist during the session. The mind is focused, though peripheral awareness is low, and the Alpha brain wave level which is low during sleep is found to be high during hypnosis. Hypnotizability varies from person from person, and it is found that the level does not change over a period of time. Those with high level of hypnotizability are good subjects as they are more open to suggestions, and they change easily for the better. However high level of hypnotizability is not the same thing as submissiveness, and good subjects are found to be strong, imaginative and independent individuals. The state of hypnosis can be self induced, or can be brought about by a therapist, and generally during the process the focus is shifted from the present place and time to another place and time to facilitate the therapy. Mind, body and spirit together work in this process.

Neuro Linguistic Programming or NLP is a method of inducing self talk and thereby creating a positive attitude in the person. This method exploits the way neurology and language comes together to create experience. Brain is always giving you messages, and self talk always goes on, but only if this talk is positive can one realize his goals. Though in most of them positive self talk is an instinctive phenomenon, it has to be inculcated in those with a pessimistic bent of mind. NLP help you to handle failures better, and assists you handle the impediments in your way to success, as it influences the process of thought and understanding in an individual and thereby the behavior. NLP is a way to self exploration, communicating the spiritual side, and the discovery of a new, much better person altogether.

Sometimes the cause of a particular phobia or complex is not apparent, and could be the result of a thought embedded in the sub-consciousness. An insecurity of the childhood could become manifest as the fear of flying, and addressing this insecurity and shifting focus from it through hypnotherapy can root out the cause of the fear, and help the individual gain confidence to board a plane. In many cases solving an obvious problem can solve many other smaller problems, and improve the quality of life in general.

Hypnotherapy and NLP provide you with practical tools and skills which help you achieve your ambitions and goals, both in life and business.

NLP As A Treatment For Headache Pain

Pain can be described as an unpleasant sensation that can range from slight, localized aching to misery. This experience consists of both physiological and psychological elements. This experience typically is responsible for a lack of enthusiasm and activity. These individuals report feeling exhausted and emotionally miserable. Frequently, people find that this sensation can negatively affect career, private, and interpersonal ties.

When injury occurs, the body discharges signals that tell the brain that there is a problem. The brain receives this message as pain, and notifies the person of the injury. The individual then reacts to the alarm, and works to resolve it. On occasion, however, the body sends a warning of pain in the absence of injury. This happens when the sensation has a psychological, instead of an actual, origin.

One way to relieve painful feelings is through the use of medicine. Non-narcotic painkillers, such as Tylenol or Aspirin, prevent the body from releasing chemicals used to notify the brain of injury. Narcotic painkillers, however, directly connect to the brain and tell them that the issue has been completely resolved. Narcotics, like morphine and Dilaudid, are sometimes very addictive and create dependency in those who use them for lengthy periods as pain management techniques.

The body also releases chemicals known as endorphins. These are Nature's painkillers, released by the brain's cells to fool the body into thinking that it does not hurt. Athletes, for instance, release endorphins after running long distances; this is the source of the "runner's high" often discussed by those who are running enthusiasts. Individuals who like to participate in other sports experience the same endorphin release. Frequently, sports enthusiasts can run or play despite an injury because of the presence of these drugs in their bodies.

Another way to treat painful experiences is by using distraction, or coached imagery. Persons are coached to concentrate on an image or to imagine a secure and relaxing setting that offers freedom from the feelings they are experiencing. Another distraction technique involves the use of music or other activities. These techniques can be used to help individuals who have ongoing lower back pain.

Persons may experience a reprieve through the use of hypnosis and Neuro-Linguistic programming approaches. These natural pain relief procedures can allow people to have relief from numerous chronic problems, like migraines and other chronic, debilitating headaches or throbbing neck pain. Many people report being able to significantly reduce, or totally end taking drugs through using these approaches.

Traditional hypnosis pain reduction methods work most helpfully for those who are open to post-hypnotic suggestions. A skilled hypnotist assists the client to go into a very relaxed state. During this time, the client is very aware of the ideas being offered by the therapist.

The hypnotherapist may suggest that the client focus on other activities or tasks, and that distraction will relieve any sense of discomfort. Actually, the mere use of the word discomfort during a hypnotic session instead of the use of the word pain can greatly diminish any sensation of pain. The majority of clients report amazing outcomes, and they can be taught to use self-hypnosis for pain relief to gain personal control of their situations.

More critical individuals most often require either Erickson-based hypnosis or NLP to successfully overcome their conscious resistance to suggestion.

The hypnosis strategy for pain treatment can also be used to train the brain to give off endorphins that can cause light anesthesia, sometimes referred to as analgesia. This state can also be used to help ladies to experience natural childbirth without using medications that may endanger the baby. It also helps to offer natural arthritis pain relief in chronic sufferers.

Hypnosis can also be used to cause total anesthesia in some people. This is referred to in medical literature as hypnoanesthesia. Long before general anesthesia became widely available to patients, many doctors performed major surgery under hypnoanesthesia.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) may be used to assist those persons who tend to think critically or analytically. Professionals help clients to master a very helpful technique employed by NLP, known as the 'Flash'. The Flash allows people to teach their subconscious minds to automatically avoid a painful sensation, and to focus on things that will create relaxation and comfort. Clients who have perfected this strategy find that they are no longer capable of focusing on the pain, because their minds instantly replace it for relaxing.

Both Neuro-Linguistic programming and hypnosis are innovative approaches that offer completely natural methods of relieving pain. They aid people to avoid painkillers or decrease their need to use these painkillers. Both those who easily receive suggestions and those who are analytical thinkers can be treated with these types of programs. Furthermore, both are very effective in assisting people to experience a reprieve from their pain.

Currently, there are many options available for receiving this type of assistance. Trained Hypnotherapists usually charge from $150.00 to $200.00 for one hour. Anyone who has sought out this type of treatment will agree that the cost spent was well worth it. A less expensive course of treatment, however may be purchasing one of the high quality hypnosis CD programs that are available.

Summary: People experience both physiological and psychological pain. Several treatments can be used; including narcotic and non-narcotic drugs, as well as guided imagery and distraction strategies. The most beneficial methods of relieving painful stimuli, however, are Neuro-Linguistic Programming and hypnosis.

The NLP Process of Deletion

The Reticular Activating System (RAS) has a few internal filter processes, one of which is Deletion. Deletion is quite simply not allowing information to enter your neurology that would otherwise enter as a result of experiences noted by your five senses. Large amounts of data are instantly blocked from entering your minds to avoid sensory overload; you aren't aware that this is happening. Everyone selectively pays attention to different experiences that occur within the same environments.

I'm sure you've experienced that two people can see the same event, but each remembers different salient points, and may not agree on certain 'facts' about the event. You experience what you focus on, as does everyone else, but as mentioned in the previous sentence, we all focus on different things. Logically, you cannot focus on what you delete, can you? Therefore, you never 'see it'.

Now, if an event, a piece of knowledge or a circumstance is one that has aroused your attention, you'll pick up on everything related to it. It's like you've suddenly become a funnel for that topic and you siphon in everything you can about it. BUT if it's not on your radar screen, the opportunity can be staring you in the face and you won't see it. That's what happens when you take an interest in something, and get madly involved with it. Then, months later, when something reminds you of it, you realize that you haven't done anything with this 'passionate interest' for quite a while and you say: "Oh, yes, I used to do that. Wonder whatever happened to it?"

What happened was, you lost focus on it. Remember the conscious mind can only handle at most 114 bits of information at a given time. If you found a new 'passionate interest', even if it is within the same subject area, what you were working on gets deleted to make room for this new 'passion'. This deletion process also happens with people you know.

If you know a person in a certain context, eg. at work, and you meet up with that person at a sporting match, dressed quite differently, you may not 'recognize' that person, as your Reticular Activating System (RAS) is not associating that person with that environment.

Have you ever said: "I can't believe it, I know that person so well, but I can't think of her name". Your eyes, your visual sensory channel, are picking up the information but the information is not hitting you consciousness; it's being deleted. You're seeing them in a different place from where you are accustomed to seeing them. Now you see, you're not forgetful, you're not getting doddery, it's quite normal. Blame it on your RAS.

Seriously your RAS is doing its job very well, without its functioning like this, in your favor, you would go nutty. So in summary, focus on what you want and not, on what you don't want. Because, you have to be careful, 'someone' is listening in - and that 'someone' is your RAS. Focus, focus, focus on what you want to make your dreams come true in all areas of your life. Setting Goals helps you maintain that focus.
